Because of the fast growth rate of duckweed, I’m considering it as a low-cost feed for rabbits. Is it good for rabbits?

Greetings all. Pls How can I keep my poultry pen dry? It has always been dry during the dry season when humidity was low, so dry to the extent of being dusty. That was also when they were on grower feed. But when they switched to layers feed, the dropping becomes watery and when the rainy season came, the litter has always been wet. I have to clean it almost every day.

We all know about the dangers to humans when we consume products from animals that have been treated with antibiotics, I’ll like to know if there are other alternatives that are equally effective as antibiotics.

In this thread, I'll like us to share experience and profer solution to this issue of area boys harassment of farmers and land owners. Whenever you want to build any structure they'll appear and start demanding for large amount of money - an amount that is enough to start a farm business.

My Experience
Before my poultry farm was built, we have to pay this people N300,000 for 3 plots of land. Now assuming we did not have the money, I'll be roaming about towns looking for job. This kept me thinking that some graduates have access to land and money to start up a business, but the fear of these people force them to go for job hunting instead.

In Anambra state, the past govnor, Peter Obi, passed a law that illegalize the acts of area boys. The law states: "D. Any person who collect or demand any fee (not approved by law) from any person developing or improving on existing development on land has a punishment of 5 years jail or N500,000 fine or both"

My father had another 2 plot of land which I'll like to develop into a rabbit and poultry farm, but I know that if I should step on the land to build anything again, these guys will appear and demand for 200k or more. For me, I'm not paying anything, I'd rather gather evidence of their activities with video cameras and sue them to court.

Hello FarmersJointers, I'm about to share with you an important info I discovered during my research. Can you imagine feeding your pullets for 5 months without getting anything? Then when they finally start laying you see different types of infections manifesting.

I have a similar experience with my birds. I had over 500 birds (I think about 535 at POL) and at a point they were laying over 15 crates of eggs per day! This is despite the fact that they suffered a disease you shud never pray for your birds to encounter (Mycoplasma Gallisepticum). Soon after they hit over 15 crates, the same disease resurfaced and others also followed. Egg production dropped to barely 9 crates per day and later rose to 14 crates. From this bad experience I learnt a lesson, and that lesson is SEROLOGICAL MONITORING.

During the pullet stage, hidden diseases that did not manifest will manifest once they start laying. This is because laying is a big stress factor for them. That is why you must give them all the necessary vaccination b4 they start laying.

After you have given your birds all the vaccination they need, how do you know if all of them will protect the birds? How sure are you that some vaccination did not fail? Serological monitoring will go a long way in helping you.

So what you do is this. At about 18 weeks or so, take 25 birds to a laboratory and tell them to do serological test for certain diseases. Right now I don't know how this is done or how much they charge, but I think the test have to be done for each disease you want to monitor.

So with serological monitoring, you'll be able to know whether to revaccinate or not. Also, when there is drop in egg production during lay, the test will help you pinpoint which disease(s) are likely to be involve. This will help you take vital actions before things go bad. Does anyone have any facts about feeding duckweed to Broilers? I mean fresh duckweed.

I think duckweed is the fastest growing plant we have. It grows on the surface of still waters and under good condition, it can double its weight within 2 days. So if you have 50kg of duckweed today, within 2 days it will increase to 100kg. The duckweed can also be added while formulating feed for layers and other birds. Despite all these advantages, I really wonder why nobody is growing duckweed. Could it be due to lack of knowledge or something else?

If you want egg layers to lay profitably after the first year, you’ll have to force molt them. Formerly, commercial farms will starve their birds to induce molting, but due to pressure from animal right groups, researchers are looking for alternative methods that don’t involve starving. I’ll like to know your view on this, are you against all methods of force molting?

I’ve come across books that say that you can use ducks to fertilize fish pond, but I’m wondering - won’t the ducks eat the fish?

How Often Should Multivits be Given to Chickens?

I've read that the most economical breed is the commercial white leghorn-type hybrids. They produce white eggs and they consume lesser feed. But the problem here is that our people then to hate white eggs.

The reds or sex-linked hybrids will lay large brown eggs and they also produce meaty carcasses. Brown eggs are easier to market in Nigeria.

Pure breeds are not very good layers.
