How to successfully grow Soursop Trees in a Container
#1
Soursop trees can be grown in a container and it will produce fruits just like when grown in the ground.

Below are some tips for growing Soursop trees in a container.

1, Planting

Ensure you plant a Soursop seedling that was propagated by Air layering or by grafting. Do not plant a Soursop seedling that has been propagated as a seed into a container.

Start with a container that is 35 liters in volume, and ensure it has drain holes at the bottom.

Use a soil that drains do not use a soil that does not drain easily, Soursop trees will not thrive when grown in a waterlogged soil.

Once you plant your young soursop tree into a container, ensure you place the container on bricks or blocks to lift up the bottom of the container from the bare floor or ground.

2, Watering

For the first 3 months give half a liter of water twice a day preferably in the later hours of the morning. Thereafter increase the  watering by giving 1 liter of water twice a day until the tree is 6 months old (Morning and afternoon).

Once the tree is repotted into an 80 liter container, you will need to give 2 liters of water twice a day.

Avoid overwatering, overwatering causes root rot diseases like Phytophthora. Phytophthora is very difficult to control once it infects the Soursop tree.

3, Fertilizer requirements

Regularly apply well composted organic manure once every 2 weeks to the soil. I recommend using  Cow or Goat manure for potted plants.
Apply 2 handfuls every 2 weeks for the first 3 months and thereafter 3 handfuls every 2 weeks until the plant is 6 months old.

After 6 months the tree will have to re potted into an 80 liter container to prevent the tree becoming root bound.

Once the tree has been repotted into an 80 liter container, applying 5 handfuls of organic manure every 2 weeks is recommended.

Apply a foliar fertilizer that has a Marco nutrient (Nitrogen Phosphorous & Potassium) ratio of 20:20:20  with additional Micronutrients (Zinc, boron, manganese, Molybdenum, Magnesium) once a month until the tree starts flowering.

Once the tree starts flowering apply a a foliar fertilizer that has a Marco nutrient (Nitrogen Phosphorous & Potassium) ratio of 6:13:46  with additional Micronutrients (Zinc, boron, manganese, Molybdenum, Magnesium) once a month.

Do not apply any chemical fertilizer to the soil.

4, Flowering & Fruit Production

Soursop trees produces hundreds of flowers during the flowering season. This flowers must be pollinated before they become fruits. Depending on your  geographical location, you can either have efficient natural pollinators available to pollinate your soursop flowers  or no efficient natural pollinators available to pollinate  the flowers.

In the absence of natural pollinators your soursop tree will produce lots of flowers and they will all wither and fall off from the trees without producing any fruit.

The only solution to prevent withering and falling off of flowers is to pollinate the Soursop flower using the hand. I have a free training video on hand pollination listed in the comment section.

With hand pollination you can successful pollinate almost all the flowers produced by the tree.

5, Pest and Disease Management

Soursop trees like all fruit trees will be infected and infested with different types of pests and diseases. However all the pest and diseases can be controlled using the proper pest and diseases management techniques.

Common pests of Soursops are Aphids, Mealybugs, Stemborers, Caterpillars and fruit flies. I have included a video in the comment sections that shows these pests and how to control them.

Common diseases of Soursop are Anthracnose & Phytophthora, I have included a video in the comment sections that shows the symptoms of this diseases  and how to control them.

Airayered soursop will start producing fruits within a year of planting
