Best egg laying chickens to Raise |

I've read that the most economical breed is the commercial white leghorn-type hybrids. They produce white eggs and they consume lesser feed. But the problem here is that our people then to hate white eggs.
The reds or sex-linked hybrids will lay large brown eggs and they also produce meaty carcasses. Brown eggs are easier to market in Nigeria.
Pure breeds are not very good layers.

It would be nice if we list herbs and there health benefits for chickens here. I know of neem leaves (dogoyaro), bitter leaves, scent leaves and moringa. Neem can replace antibiotics to some extent.

Occassional Paralysis In Chickens |

What could be the cause of occasional paralysis in chickens? Sometimes, especially during the hot seasons, I will meet some birds lying paralyzed, with their legs stretched behind them. I suspect Newcastle disease though. Do you think it could also be due to heat stroke?

I'm the administrator of this forum. This is where you introduce yourself. Tell us anything about yourself - course of study, business etc. For example I'm a poultry farmer but I read Mechanical engineering at FUTO. I love agriculture so much that by the grace of God, I have a plan to set up an integrated farm like that of Songhai. I hope you now get what I mean. So feel free to introduce yourselves. Thanks.

Is there market for tilapia fish in Nigeria, especially the south-east region? I’ve visited several markets but I’ve not seen anyone selling tilapia. Does it mean there is no demand for it? What if it is smoked and sold as smoked fish?

Have You Ever Milk a Goat? |

I read that our West African Dwarf goat is a good milk producer. Some Americans are using them as a source of family fresh milk. But our people are completely ignorant of this. I’m wondering if anyone here has ever milk a goat.

Chicken Diseases: How to Get Rid of Mucus in the Mouth |

When chickens are down with respiratory diseases such as Newcastle disease, Coryza and CRD (Chronic Respiratory Disease), one of the symptoms is usually mucus clogging the throat and wind pipe. This mucus usually ends up choking the sick birds to death.
I’ve come across an effective way to to get rid of the mucus, and that is by using an antibiotic that contains Bromehexine. Few examples of such drugs include Enflox, Conflox, EnroFloxacin, Bromeflox etc. Most of the listed drugs contains Enrofloxacin, an antibiotic that’s ban in some countries. If it is ban in your country, you can go for any other drug against respiratory diseases, but they should also contain Bromehexine.
