FG Unveils Seven Nigerian Herbal Medicines for Cancer, Hepatitis B and More

The Federal Government has unveiled seven herbal medicines developed by the Nigeria Natural Medicine Development Agency (NNMDA) for the treatment or management of:

Hepatitis B
Peptic ulcer disease
Prostate, colorectal and ovarian cancers
High cholesterol
Hypertension
Erectile dysfunction (aphrodisiac)

The products include:
Namdavir: For hepatitis B
Namdacid: For peptic ulcers
Turmegol: help prevent or slow the progression of certain cancers
Namdorol: For high cholesterol and hypertension
Namgor: Aphrodisiac
Zobo Tea: For hypertension

The Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Kingsley Udeh, said Nigeria has abundant medicinal plants and pledged support for a Clinical Observational Research Centre and increased funding to strengthen research and commercialisation.

NNMDA Director-General Martins Emeje said the agency has developed over 22 herbal products since 2023 and aims to reduce drug importation by producing standardised herbal medicines in forms such as capsules, tablets and syrups. He also claimed one of the products could create 3.5 million jobs if fully commercialised.
