The Federal Government has unveiled seven herbal medicines developed by the Nigeria Natural Medicine Development Agency (NNMDA) for the treatment or management of:
Hepatitis B
Peptic ulcer disease
Prostate, colorectal and ovarian cancers
High cholesterol
Hypertension
Erectile dysfunction (aphrodisiac)
The products include:
Namdavir: For hepatitis B
Namdacid: For peptic ulcers
Turmegol: help prevent or slow the progression of certain cancers
Namdorol: For high cholesterol and hypertension
Namgor: Aphrodisiac
Zobo Tea: For hypertension
The Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Kingsley Udeh, said Nigeria has abundant medicinal plants and pledged support for a Clinical Observational Research Centre and increased funding to strengthen research and commercialisation.
NNMDA Director-General Martins Emeje said the agency has developed over 22 herbal products since 2023 and aims to reduce drug importation by producing standardised herbal medicines in forms such as capsules, tablets and syrups. He also claimed one of the products could create 3.5 million jobs if fully commercialised.
The article reports these products have been unveiled by the government, but it does not state that they have completed the large-scale clinical trials typically required to establish safety and effectiveness to the same standard as approved conventional medicines. We have many medicinal plants that deserve serious study instead of depending almost entirely on imported drugs.

Nigeria has talked about local medicine for years. It will be encouraging if these products become affordable, available in hospitals, and are proven to work through independent clinical studies.

Our forests are full of medicinal plants. Instead of exporting raw materials, we should invest in research and produce medicines here. That will create jobs and reduce import bills.

India has shown that traditional medicine can become a global industry when supported by research. Nigeria has similar potential if we remain focused on quality and international standards.

My biggest concern is affordability. Many Nigerians struggle to buy medicines. If these products become too expensive, they will not benefit the people who need them most.
