Aspilia africana to Rabbits
#1
Aspilia africana is a weed that can be found in nigeria and other countries. It is good for rabbits. It can increase their milk production and growth. Fresh one will give higher milk yield and growth than wilted one.

In this experiment, the diets used were:
Centrosema pubescens: 200g or
Sweet potato leaves: 200g or
Panicum maxima: 100g or
Aspilia africana: 500g

The rabbits were also fed a concentrate feed that contains:
Maize offal: 45%
Palm kernel cake: 30%
Soybean meal: 20%
Blood meal: 2%
Bone meal: 2%
Vitamins-minerals premix: 0.25%
Salt: 0.25%

250g of the premix contains vit A: 1500IU, vit D: 300IU, Vit E: 3 IU, vit k: 0.25g, Thiamine: 0.2mg, Riboflavin: 0.6mg, Pantothenic acid: 1mg, Pyridoxine: 0.4999mg, Niacin:4mg, vit B2: 0.002mg, Folic acid: 0.1mg, Biotin: 0.008mg, Choline: 0.05g, Antioxidant: 0.012g, Manganese: 0.0096g, Zinc: 0.006g, Copper: 0.0006g, Iodine: 0.00014g, Selenium: 0.024mg, Cobalt: 0.004mg

More info:

The inclusion of choline chloride in the premix will help prevent fatty liver. Good choice.

In rabbits, excess fat can accumulate in the liver when energy intake (eg maize, pkc, oil cakes etc) is high but nutrient balance is off. Choline helps in fat metabolism by transporting fat out of the liver. Without enough choline, you risk fatty liver, poor growth, and sometimes reproductive issues.

It also supports better feed efficiency and overall health. That might also explain why the rabbits maintained good performance even with palm kernel cake at 30%, since PKC is a bit fibrous and can affect digestion if not balanced.

Thanks for sharing this. I’ve always seen Aspilia africana as just a common weed. Didn’t know it could actually boost milk yield in rabbits. This is really useful.

This premix looks solid. But I’m curious - did the vitamins and minerals come pre-mixed or did you formulate them yourself?

Very useful plant. Aspilia africana also has some medicinal properties (anti-inflammatory, wound healing).

The concentrate composition looks balanced. With 20% soybean meal plus blood meal, crude protein should be quite high. That explains why growth performance was good alongside the forages.

Fresh leaves giving higher yield than wilted makes sense — nutrients like vitamins degrade quickly after cutting. The trade-off is just palatability, since wilted is sometimes easier for rabbits to accept.

I think combining Aspilia with Centrosema or sweet potato might give even better results.
