Why spend so much on a greenhouse when one can still plant something outside and still succeed? I don't think we that live in the tropics need it. What do you guys think?
What's so special about green houses?

he advantages i read so far include less water, less fertilisers and less crop protection substances per hectare than open field cultivation. The crop are protected from extreme weather conditions. But despite all these I don't think it is worth it for us in the tropics because with drip irrigation and plastic mulch I can greatly conserve water and fertilizer needs in an open field. I think those that has a lot to Benefit are those with winter seasons when frost will easily kill most crops.

On a second thought, I think greenhouses are good for high value crops like cucumber, tomatoes etc that are prone to diseases under wet and humid conditions. Rainy season is when fungal diseases thrive and with green houses u can prevent plant leaves from getting wet. But constructing one is very costly.

Thanks for the feedback. I can see that it is good but cost is the problem.
