Does it smell a lot?

Keep it dry and it won't smell much. You can do that by ensuring that there is good airflow through the building. If possible install fans if ventilation is poor.

Yes, keep it dry, but it can be difficult in the rainy seasons. Fans will help and also ensure that litter (wood shavings) depth is about 5cm.
