Some of the brightest students at Harvard and MIT are leaving school — not because they can’t handle the work, but because they believe the future is moving too fast.
1. AI leaders at OpenAI and Google DeepMind warn that artificial general intelligence (AGI) could arrive before 2030.
2. Many students don’t want to “waste time” on degrees they think may soon be irrelevant.
3. Alice Blair left MIT to work at the Center for AI Safety, saying: “I was scared I wouldn’t even live to graduate. If AGI keeps advancing, it could mean human extinction.”
4. Others worry less about survival and more about money. A recent survey shows half of Harvard students believe their careers will be obsolete within a few years.
5. As Nikola Juckovic, head of Harvard’s AI safety group, puts it: “If your field will be automated before the decade’s out, every year in school is a year lost in the workforce."
6. Whether it’s fear or foresight, one thing is clear: the AI future isn’t waiting for anyone.
Do you think dropping out now is smart - or just panic?
