EVERY FREEDOM IS NOT A FREEDOM.
Just look at the experience of FLAVOUR, the popular Igbo musician of the 'N'abania fame.
" I stopped masturbation when I began to sleep with different women in hotels"
That sounds sweet right?
Follow me a little further,
Igbos have an adage that says, "Onye rere nkita, gote enwe, marakwa na ihe ntukwu ka no be ya"
He that sells a dog and buys a monkey should remember that a squatting animal is still with him.
You see, SIN is like a faculty in a University, when a student is transferred from Political science department to department of Economics, he is still in Social science faculty.
When you jump from Department of Urban and Regional Planning to Estate Management, you are still in environmental science faculty.
You see IMMORALITY is like a Faculty in the University of Iniquity.
Whether Satan moves a man from one department to another, say: department of:
-Masturbation
-Incest
-Pornography
-Adultery
-Fornication
-Bestiality
-Homo
-Lesbi
-Sexting
-Hookupism
-Sugar Daddism
-Sugar Mummism
Etc
That man is still in the same Faculty.
Yes!
Of course , he is still in the same faculty.
There may be different HODs but there is a common Dean of Faculty who controls what happens in every department.
Flavour's experience may sound like deliverance but that's a deeper bondage.
No slave is free because his shackles is changed from iron to bronze or even rope.
No wonder the scripture says"Whosoever the Son of man shall set free shall be free INDEED"(emphasis on 'INDEED")
Every freedom might look like freedom but freedom is different from freedom INDEED.
Jesus does not set sinners free, he sets FREE INDEED.
They are not the same.

The Flavour example really makes you think. Someone may look at a particular change and call it freedom, but the bigger question is whether the person has actually escaped the lifestyle that was controlling him.

“Different department, same faculty” is probably the strongest part of this message. It explains how people sometimes replace one habit with another and convince themselves they have changed.

I have seen this happen in real life. Someone stops one bad habit but immediately develops another one. From outside, it looks like progress, but internally, the problem has simply changed form.

The Igbo proverb fits perfectly here. Selling a dog and buying a monkey does not mean you have escaped having an animal that squats. Sometimes we change the appearance of the problem without changing the problem itself.
The message is basically saying that freedom is not just about stopping one particular sin. There has to be a deeper transformation of the person.

I like the distinction between “freedom” and “freedom indeed.” There are things people call freedom because they have moved away from one restriction, but they may have simply entered another kind of bondage.

The faculty analogy is powerful. Political Science and Economics are different departments, but they remain under the same faculty. In the same way, different sinful behaviours can have different appearances while still coming from the same spiritual problem.

Human effort alone may change behaviour, but genuine spiritual freedom comes through Christ.
This also makes me think about addiction generally. A person can stop one behaviour and develop another. That is why dealing with the root cause is often more important than simply changing the outward behaviour.
