What factors can affect the number of eggs a chicken lay? - John@ - 12-08-2014

Please list as many as possible. I know of giving extra 14-16 hours of light, keeping them healthy, clean environment etc. Is there any medication that can be used to boost egg production?

A lot is involve. Diseases can influence egg production, that's why you have to vaccinate them properly. Employ experienced vet doctors to help you with vaccination and disease control. The state of their house also matters. If litter is wet, the high ammonia emission as a result will stress the birds badly and reduce egg production. Absence or presence of predators, feed and water quality, temperature etc. also matters. You can booste egg production by giving additional methionine and egg booster drugs.

Genetic of the bird also matters. Commercial hybrids like Isa, Shika, Shaver, Nera, Babcock etc lay more eggs. You can tap their full potential if you ensure good vaccination, give probiotics, good ventilation, maintain optimal temperature etc.

High Temperature is a major problem in the tropics. Poor management due to poverty is also a problem.
