Folate defficiency in Pregnancy is a disaster - MamaGreens - 12-12-2025

This baby was born to a woman who has folate deficiency and didn't take folic acid during her antenatal period.

What you see below is a congenital neural tube defect known as Spinal Bifida.

And as a result of the above, the pregnant mother had a very large tummy size which was more than the actual age of the fetus due to excessive water in the womb (amniotic fluid),a phenomenon we call Polyhydramnios.

So take your folic acid supplement seriously especially for the first 3 months.

Eat green leafy vegetables as well.

One 5mg Tablet of Folic Acid daily is fine.

This is an important reminder. Many people don’t know folic acid is most crucial before pregnancy and in the first trimester.

I’ve seen cases like this. It’s sad but preventable. Folic acid is really cheap, no reason to skip it.

Green vegetables like ugu, spinach, and scent leaf also help. People underestimate how powerful food nutrients are.

Also good to mention: some pregnancies need folic acid even before conception, especially if there’s a history of neural tube defects.

One 5mg tablet daily is very affordable in Nigeria. No excuse. It can prevent a lifelong problem.

This is why planning pregnancy helps. At least start folic acid early instead of waiting till later.

Some pregnancies are unplanned, so many mothers don’t take folic acid early enough. Awareness is needed.

My wife is pregnant now, and I make sure she eats ugu and spinach from the farm. Most people overlook vegetables, but they are natural folic acid.

Folic acid cheap pass fertilizer. If small money can prevent problems, better to take it early than suffer later.

We farmers understand growth stages. First trimester is like the germination stage, if you miss nutrients at that stage, the plant never grows well again.
