The Attack of the Dead Men: 1915 WW1 - Farm-sultan - 10-13-2025 The Germans thought everyone inside Osowiec Fortress was dead. On August 6, 1915, they unleashed a massive wave of chlorine gas against the Russian defenders. The toxic cloud rolled across the battlefield, killing hundreds within minutes. Confident of victory, the Germans — about 7,000 strong - advanced behind the gas, expecting silence. But what they saw next would haunt them forever. Out of the green mist came a handful of men — around 60 to 100 survivors — staggering, coughing, and bleeding. Their uniforms were torn, their faces wrapped in rags. The gas had burned their lungs and skin, yet they raised their rifles and fixed their bayonets. The “dead” men charged. Seeing these wounded soldiers coming toward them through the poison cloud, the German lines broke. Panic spread, and the attackers fled, trampling each other in their retreat. The Russians held the fortress that day — a victory so unlikely it became known as The Attack of the Dead Men. A few 1 later, the defenders withdrew under orders, but their courage became legend — a symbol of what determination can look like, even on the edge of death. The image of soldiers who could barely breathe still choosing to charge is beyond bravery. It shows how powerful the human will can be when pushed to the limit. The Attack of the Dead Men truly lives up to its name. RE: The Attack of the Dead Men: 1915 WW1 - Henlus - 10-13-2025 I first read about this in a Russian military archive translation. The soldiers were part of the 226th Infantry Regiment, led by Lieutenant Vladimir Karpovich Kotlinsky, who was just 21. He died that same day, but his name still lives in Russian history books. RE: The Attack of the Dead Men: 1915 WW1 - Manihot - 10-13-2025 What makes this story stand out is not just the horror of gas warfare, but the psychology of it. The Germans weren’t defeated by bullets that day — they were defeated by fear. Seeing men who “should have been dead” walking toward them shattered their morale. RE: The Attack of the Dead Men: 1915 WW1 - YoungAgropreneur - 10-13-2025 I always thought gas masks were standard in WWI, but apparently not at this stage. The Russians had almost no protection — they used wet cloths, mud, and rags to cover their faces. Still, that simple act probably saved a few lives. RE: The Attack of the Dead Men: 1915 WW1 - CassavaBoss - 10-13-2025 Chlorine gas was one of the most terrifying weapons of World War I. It reacts with moisture in the lungs to form hydrochloric acid, literally burning soldiers from the inside. The fact that anyone survived long enough to fight back is incredible. RE: The Attack of the Dead Men: 1915 WW1 - GreenVet - 10-13-2025 Chlorine gas wasn’t the only weapon used in WWI. Later, both sides used phosgene and mustard gas, which were even more deadly. Osowiec was one of the early warnings about how cruel chemical warfare could become. RE: The Attack of the Dead Men: 1915 WW1 - MamaGreens - 10-13-2025 The Osowiec Fortress itself was considered almost indestructible for its time — surrounded by swamps and reinforced walls. But no fortress can survive without soldiers like those who stood their ground that day. RE: The Attack of the Dead Men: 1915 WW1 - Techie Farmer - 10-13-2025 Gas warfare was banned after the war for a reason. Osowiec was one of the early cases that showed how inhumane it was. It’s sad that humanity had to learn that lesson through so much suffering. RE: The Attack of the Dead Men: 1915 WW1 - AgMan - 10-13-2025 Chemical warfare. A little below biological warfare |
