Not all “tetanus injections” are the same. Here’s the simple truth:
1. TT (Tetanus Toxoid) – Builds long-term protection, but takes days to work. Best for routine immunization/boosters, not emergencies.
2. Td (Tetanus + Diphtheria) – Same as TT but also protects against diphtheria. Mostly for adults and mothers.
3. ATS (Anti-Tetanus Serum) – Works immediately but only protects short-term. Made from horse serum, so it can cause allergic reactions. Still used in many places.
4. TIG (Tetanus Immune Globulin) – The safer, modern option. Works immediately like ATS, but it’s made from human plasma, so fewer side effects. The challenge is that it’s more expensive and not always available in local pharmacies.
Many people get TT wrongly after an injury — but TT cannot protect you instantly. That’s why knowing the difference can save a life.
Always ask: Which tetanus injection is this? Why am I getting it?
A. TT = routine protection
B. Td = adult/mother booster
C. ATS/TIG = emergency, immediate action
