For two thousand years the settled treatment for almost any illness was to open a vein and drain the patient.

In 1799 it helped see off George Washington.

1847: Semmelweis showed handwashing took childbed deaths from one in six to almost none. Insulted, his colleagues ran him out, and he died in an asylum.

1900s: they sold radium as a health tonic and fitted children's shoes by X-ray in the shop. Then the jaws and the feet started to rot.

1949: they gave the Nobel Prize in Medicine to the lobotomy. A decade later it was a byword for butchery.

1950s: they prescribed thalidomide to pregnant women and swore it was gentle. Then the babies arrived.

1960s: they whipped out millions of children's tonsils on sight. Then they checked, found most never needed it, and stopped.

Every one of those was the settled science of its day. The journals, the committees, the experts, and a special contempt for the doubters.

Every one moved.

So look at what carries that same certainty now:
A statin for every middle-aged adult.

An acid blocker for life.

An antidepressant in a ten-minute slot.

A weight-loss jab you must never come off.

All of it said in the same confident voice. Backed by the same kind of committee.

The doubters have a better track record than the consensus does.

They always have.

History shows that medicine has changed many times. Treatments that were once considered the best later turned out to be harmful or unnecessary. That does not mean every modern treatment is wrong, but it does remind us that science keeps learning. Doctors should always be willing to question old ideas and improve when better evidence appears.
This is a good reminder that confidence is not the same as truth. Many experts in the past genuinely believed they were helping people, but later discoveries proved otherwise. We should stay open-minded, ask questions, and continue doing research instead of assuming we already know everything.
One lesson from history is that progress often begins with someone challenging the accepted view. If nobody questioned old medical practices, many harmful treatments would still exist today. Healthy debate, good research, and better evidence are all important parts of improving healthcare.
Reading about these examples makes me appreciate how much medicine has changed. At the same time, it also shows why medical advice changes over time. As new studies are completed, doctors sometimes discover better ways to prevent or treat disease. That is how science is supposed to work.
I think the biggest lesson here is humility. Nobody knows everything, and every generation believes it has reached the highest level of knowledge. Then new discoveries appear and change the picture. That should encourage scientists and the public to stay curious instead of becoming overconfident.
People should never be mocked simply for asking reasonable questions. Respectful discussion helps everyone learn. At the same time, it is also important to separate genuine evidence from rumours because not every criticism turns out to be correct either.
The story of handwashing is one of the strongest examples of why evidence matters. One person's careful observations eventually saved countless lives, even though many people rejected the idea at first. Good ideas should be judged by the evidence, not by popularity.
It is interesting how history repeats itself. Every generation has beliefs that seem unquestionable until new information appears. That is why critical thinking is valuable. We should listen to experts while also encouraging research that tests existing ideas.
The best science is never afraid of questions. If a treatment truly works, more evidence should make it even stronger. If better evidence shows a problem, then changing course is a sign of progress rather than failure
This post reminds us not to treat experts as if they are incapable of making mistakes. Experts are human, and history proves that humans can be wrong. The goal should not be blind trust or blind rejection, but careful examination of the facts.
It is always wise to read widely before forming an opinion. One article or one study rarely tells the whole story. Looking at different viewpoints and comparing evidence usually leads to a more balanced understanding of complex medical issues.
